Social Stratification and Its Impact on Educational Attainment and Occupational Mobility: An Empirical Multilevel Analysis

 Abstract

Social stratification continues to be a fundamental structural aspect of contemporary societies, influencing life opportunities across different generations. Education is often seen as a key driver of social mobility; nonetheless, research indicates that educational systems frequently perpetuate rather than diminish existing social disparities. This research paper explores the intricate connections between social stratification, educational achievement, and occupational mobility through an empirical multilevel analytical framework. By incorporating insights from sociology, economics, and education, the study views stratification as a complex phenomenon that includes class, caste, income, gender, and geographic location. The article reviews both classical and modern theories of stratification, examines empirical evidence from various settings, and suggests a multilevel methodological approach to investigate how individual characteristics interact with institutional and contextual factors to affect educational and occupational outcomes. The study contends that while educational attainment plays a mediating role, it does not completely counteract the influence of social origin on occupational mobility. The paper concludes by stressing the policy implications of ongoing inequality and underscores the necessity for interdisciplinary research and structural changes to foster fair educational and labor-market outcomes.
