Determinants of Medication Adherence Among Patients with Chronic Diseases: A Cross-Sectional Analytical Study

Abstract

Adherence to medication is a crucial factor influencing clinical outcomes for individuals with chronic illnesses. Even with advancements in medical treatments, inadequate adherence continues to be a widespread issue that compromises treatment effectiveness, escalates healthcare expenses, and reduces patients’ quality of life. This analytical cross-sectional study examines the factors affecting medication adherence in patients with chronic conditions, emphasizing socio-demographic, clinical, psychosocial, and health system elements. Data were gathered from 1,200 patients visiting outpatient chronic care clinics at three urban hospitals using structured questionnaires and validated adherence scales. Regression analyses highlighted significant predictors of adherence, such as age, educational attainment, complexity of medication regimens, health literacy, social support, and communication between patients and providers. The results reveal that non-adherence is influenced by multiple factors, including individual behaviors and systemic obstacles. Addressing these factors through targeted interventions could improve adherence and enhance outcomes for chronic diseases. The study also offers recommendations for practice and future research.

The research highlights the importance of adopting a comprehensive strategy that combines patient education, customized communication methods, and improvements at the system level to effectively tackle barriers to adherence. Improving health literacy and nurturing supportive relationships between patients and providers are crucial for encouraging long-term medication adherence. Future studies should investigate intervention models that integrate behavioral, technological, and structural elements to enhance adherence results across various chronic disease groups.
